Brooklyn, NY – On May 31, 2025, GucckiiDaGreat & Co, in partnership with Brownsville In Violence Out (BIVO) and CAMBA, hosted The Fashion Lab at the Van Dyke Community Center in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Designed to disrupt cycles of trauma through creativity, education, and opportunity, the event brought together a diverse lineup of fashion professionals, artists, and educators to deliver hands-on workshops and a community-focused runway show.
Approximately 100 to 150 attendees participated in creative skill-building sessions focused on hand sewing, cornrowing, makeup application, styling, and modeling. The workshops were led by a team of seasoned instructors, including Ebony Baker, Shaniece McKie, Brieanna Spruill, Ginnele Williams, Jonah Caraballo, Malkaya Wiggerton, and Evangela M.
A standout session, “Styling 101,” was taught by Rick Davy, founder of Fashion Week Brooklyn and former stylist for BET’s 106 & Park. All youth participants received certificates to acknowledge their completion of the workshops.
The event also featured a runway show with professional models from across the tri-state area, highlighting collections by G.A.R. Creative Customs, BrookeShae Co., and Vivre La Vie. The fashion presentation was complemented by live performances from Moe Money, L. Smith, and Sehki, an independent artist based in Philadelphia.
The show’s glam and backstage team included Latearia Nugent and Quashemia Grier, who handled makeup and styling. Post-event cleanup and breakdown were managed by community volunteers Keith Tolbert, Timothy King, and Kaseim Lawson, emphasizing the event’s community-centered mission.
The Fashion Lab was created in collaboration with Brownsville In Violence Out, a grassroots organization committed to transforming public safety in Brownsville. Known for its street-level violence interruption, mentoring programs, and trauma-informed support services, BIVO’s involvement reinforced the event’s deeper purpose: to provide safe, creative alternatives to gun violence and systemic neglect.
GucckiiDaGreat & Co, a company rooted in sustainable fashion and community engagement, sees The Fashion Lab as a mobile solution for healing and inspiration. Fashion becomes more than clothing - it becomes a bridge to opportunity, self-expression, and vision for the future.
Plans are already underway to bring The Fashion Lab to Queens, the Bronx, Manhattan, Staten Island, and several regions in New Jersey, with the aim of expanding access to fashion and arts programming for underserved communities across the East Coast.
