Surging Waves in Chang’an: Digital Intelligence Empowers Culture to Be Near At Hand

In 2025, led by “Culture-Driven City” strategy, Xi’an has actively embraced the wave of digitalization. It accelerated the release of modern values of its historical and cultural resources, striving to build a city brand with international influence. Following the 2025 World Internet Conference Forum on Digitalization of Cultural Heritage held in Xi'an, another major announcement was made in September: Xi’an officially released the Implementation Plan for Building the Tang Poetry Cultural Brand of Xi'an. It plans to spend build an internationally influential “City of Tang Poetry” cultural brand within three years, so as to inherit Chinese cultural context and promote the creative transformation and innovative development of excellent traditional culture in China.

As an important birthplace of the Chinese nation and Chinese civilization, Xi’an has accumulated profound cultures. Tang poetry, a brilliant treasure of China's excellent traditional culture, is the most outstanding representative of Tang culture. When building the “City of Tang Poetry”, Xi’an has made full use of digital technology to inject new vitality into the ancient Tang poetry culture in modern society. In September this year, Xi’an Museum launched the “Elegant Chang’an-Digital Immersive Exhibition of Wang Wei's Cultural Art”. With the museum’s collection: Qing Dynasty Imitation of Zhao Mengfu's Scroll Copy of Wang Youcheng's Wangchuan Villa Map, as the core narrative thread, the exhibition has reproduced the landscape, pastoral scenes and Zen world in Wang Wei's poems by means of 4K light and shadow, 3D animation, real-time interaction and other multimedia technologies. In addition, Xi’an has also set up a museum-themed exhibition activity titled “Cultural Relics Want to Say: Chang'an in Tang Poetry” in the core area of Xi'an Railway Station. Through digital means, tourists can feel the charm of Tang poetry even during the intervals of their trips, truly realizing the scene “bringing culture into life and making the public get close to history”, and making Tang poetry “come alive” in the present and integrate into the city.

Technological empowerment has not only reconstructed the experience but also extended the cultural and tourism industry chain. In “Twelve Hours in Chang'an” theme block, when tourists stop in front of the camera, AI will accurately match their temperament to generate Tang-style portraits that combine ancient charm and picture texture, allowing tourists to intuitively experience “another version of themselves in a different time and space”. The intelligent tour guide of Xi'an City Wall and the digitalization of ancient books in the Xi'an Branch of the National Archives of Publications and Culture also adopt AI technology to provide tourists with more convenient and personalized services, building a smart cultural and tourism ecological chain covering services, tour guidance and interactive experience.

Moreover, Xi’an has also used technologies, such as XR and MR, to “animate” historical culture. The world’s first full-sensory experience virtual reality project themed on the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang equipped with a multi-dimensional dynamic platform can ensure tourists to go deep into Qin Mausoleum and have “close interactions” with precious cultural relics, such as the Terracotta Warriors and Bronze Chariots. They will uncover secrets behind this mysterious mausoleum. During the summer vacation, when climbing Xi'an City Wall, tourists will witness the fantastic scene of ancient offensive and defensive battles with only a pair of MR glasses. Virtual golden-armored warriors jump out from the digital crenels and blend perfectly with the real city wall.

Through a series of “digital and intelligent cultural and tourism” measures, Xi'an is gradually realizing the organic integration of its historical and cultural characteristics with the modern image of the city, and continuously enhancing the city's international influence. In the future, Xi'an will continue to adhere to the “Culture-Driven City” strategy and take digital technology as an engine to promote the high-quality development of the cultural and tourism industry and show a more unique urban charm on the world stage so as to allow more people to appreciate the profound heritage and contemporary style of this millennium-old capital.
