What Happened?

Shares of semiconductor company Semtech (NASDAQ:SMTC) jumped 9.3% in the afternoon session after the stock continued to rally as the company announced the sale of its cellular module business for $62 million, a move aimed at sharpening its focus on high-growth areas like AI data-center networking.

According to a company press release, Semtech sold the unit to Compal Electronics in a cash deal, a significant boost to its financial position. Hong Hou, Semtech's CEO, stated the divestiture allows the company to concentrate on data center and LoRa connectivity, where it has the strongest conviction for growth. This shift was viewed positively by analysts, with Stifel reiterating a Buy rating and an $188 price target on the stock. The firm highlighted potential revenue outperformance driven by accelerating demand for AI infrastructure, noting an expansion in the 800G and 1.6T shipment cycle.

Contributing to the momentum, Anthropic told prospective investors its second-quarter revenue jumped more than 14-fold, according to Bloomberg, with preliminary revenue of more than $11.5 billion versus $4.73 billion in the first quarter. That sequential doubling, and a move into positive adjusted operating income, could be evidence AI labs can keep funding chip spend.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Semtech’s shares are extremely volatile and have had 59 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 3 days ago when the stock gained 3.5% on the news that Needham maintained its 'Buy' rating and $200 price target on the stock. Analyst N. Quinn Bolton's confirmation signals confidence in Semtech's future performance.

The reiteration highlights the company's potential for significant growth in the semiconductor sector, particularly in areas such as data center networking and IoT connectivity. The consistent price target of $200 indicates a belief in the company's ability to achieve substantial growth.

Semtech is up 105% since the beginning of the year, and at $154.60 per share, it is trading close to its 52-week high of $169.35 from June 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Semtech’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,443.
